Define the protected systems
List critical files, computers, servers and cloud services. Record what is included, what is excluded, who owns the data and which external providers are involved.
DITC · BACKUP & RECOVERY
Know what is backed up, who checks it and how to restore it. DITC helps Canadian businesses define independent backup services and recovery work through an agreed project or service scope.
HOW WE WORK
A successful backup job is only part of the picture. Recovery planning connects the data, applications, accounts and dependencies needed to get your team working again after loss, failure or an incident.
List critical files, computers, servers and cloud services. Record what is included, what is excluded, who owns the data and which external providers are involved.
Choose a backup schedule and retention policy that fit the agreed business requirements. Define the acceptable data-loss window and recovery-time objective as planning targets in your contract.
Agree a restoration test, verify the recovered information and record the process. Identify who can access backups and who authorizes recovery work after an incident.
THE NEXT STEPS
Choose which business activities must resume first and list the systems, information and access they depend on.
Confirm the provider, protected data, storage, retention, access controls and ongoing charges in a written quote.
Perform the agreed restoration test and record the outcome, gaps and next review date.
Independent backup subscriptions and recovery work are separate unless your written agreement explicitly includes them. The quote defines the systems, retention, responsibilities and charges.
Synchronization and an independent backup serve different purposes. We review what your provider can restore, for how long and under which failure scenarios before defining backup coverage.
Recovery depends on the systems, backup condition and incident. Any recovery objectives and testing commitments must be defined in the agreement; this page does not provide a guaranteed restoration time.
